The Port of Churchill is Canada's only Arctic seaport, and is strategically located on the west coast of Hudson Bay.The Port brings the world of ocean trade to the doorstep of Western Canada. Churchill’s unique location provides opportunities for the export of grain, manufactured, mining and forest products, as well as the import of ores, minerals, steel, building materials, fertilizer and petroleum products for distribution in the heartland of Canada and the U.S.

The Port of Churchill is the closest ocean port to the vast grain growing area of Western Canada. Located at the Port is a 140,000-tonne elevator, with the ability to unload over 100 rail cars per day and load over 1,200 MT per hour into vessels. The port can efficiently load Panamax size vessels and offers four berths for the loading and unloading of grain, general cargo, and tanker vessels. Close coordination with the Hudson Bay Railway allows efficient access to all North American railways through a connection with the Canadian National Railway system.

The port provides an excellent transportation option for Canadian exporters to and from Europe, Russia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. Using the Port of Churchill eliminates time-consuming navigation, additional handling and high-cost transportation through the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

The Port is also a vital link in the trans-shipment of petroleum products and goods of all kinds to the communities of Nunavut located in the Hudson Bay region. Vessel Operators now provide scheduled service to the Nunavut region each season, providing reliable supply of goods to communities in the Kivalliq region including Arviat, Rankin Inlet and Baker Lake.

The current shipping season runs from mid-July to the beginning of November however, changing global weather patterns has provided for longer ice-free periods in the Hudson Strait and Hudson Bay. Up to date ice information is provided by the government of Canada through their website at www.ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca.

The community of Churchill is a vibrant one of over 1,000 permanent residents. Tourism is a significant economic driver in the community with tourists arriving from all parts of the world to view nature at its finest in the Canadian Arctic. The community is served by an all-weather airport that can accommodate large jet aircraft. The daily flight service along with regularly scheduled year round VIA rail passenger service connects Churchill to Winnipeg, the capital city of Manitoba.
