The Hudson Bay Railway (HBRY) owns and operates over 810 miles of former Canadian National trackage with a network that connects with CN in The Pas, running north through Manitoba to the Hudson Bay. It is a vital transportation link, providing service to Northern Manitoba's important, but remote, resource-based industries, as well as a link in the supply chain to the communities in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. Major customers include the Canadian Wheat Board, Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting, Tolko Manitoba, Gardewine North, Manitoba Hydro, and various grain merchandisers. Canadian Wheat Board marketed wheat and durum as well as other crops grown in Western Canada are exported through the HBRY's sister company, the Port of Churchill, which is located at the northern terminus of the railway.

The other major commodities that HBR handles include metal concentrates, copper and zinc metal, logs, kraft paper, lumber, petroleum products, construction material and general merchandise. In partnership with Gardewine North, HBR offers a transload service in Thompson, which includes transloading between truck and railcars, automobile transportation, as well as piggyback service, largely between Churchill and Thompson. The HBRY provides passenger service under contract for VIA Rail Canada.
