The Churchill Gateway Development Corporation (CGDC) was established in June 2003 for the purpose of marketing the Port of Churchill through diversifying the traffic base and building two-way traffic.
The CGDC is a non-share, public-private partnership and includes representation from the Government of Canada (Western Economic Diversification), the Province of Manitoba and OmniTRAX, INC. OmniTRAX is the private owner/operator of the Port of Churchill and the railway that serves the Port, the Hudson Bay Railway Company.
The CGDC has compiled a dedicated Board of Directors comprised of academics, business leaders, former statesmen and logistic experts which reflect the serious commitment of Manitoban and Canadian leaders to the successful future of the Port of Churchill. The Board is chaired by Lloyd Axworthy, former Foreign Affairs Minister for the Government of Canada and current President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg.
The Vision of the Churchill Gateway Development Corporation is to achieve full realization of the “Churchill Advantage” with a thriving trade and tourism route. The Port of Churchill benefits from being the most cost effective route for Western Canadian shippers to destinations in northern Europe and the Middle East.
The CGDC is Here to Assist You
The CGDC facilitates the research and determines the feasibility of distribution of new products that may be suitable for shipment through the Port. Successes have included the inbound shipment of bulk fertilizer from Russia by way of the Murmansk-Churchill “Arctic Bridge” Partnership, and the short sea shipment of grain to the Port of Halifax in 2007.
Efforts are also being made to explore the shipment of containers of specialized crops, the export/import of fuel from Russia and Europe and other opportunities for diversification of products moved through the Port. The CGDC is especially interested in creating shipping efficiencies through the two-way movement of cargo.
The CGDC actively pursues business opportunities and provides a forum for the development of innovative business ideas and the coordination and funding of various business cases to support new infrastructure development. We also provide up to date operational and navigational information for vessel owners and their crews interested in using the Port.
The CGDC head office is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in direct line with the North-South Trade Corridor. If you would like to discuss potential or existing opportunities at the Port of Churchill, please feel free to contact us at 1-204-947-0033.
